Q&A with Boutique Owner Ana

What does your job entail?

I own the contemporary women's clothing boutique, Asterisk. As a small business owner I wear several hats. Customer service is a huge part of my job. I believe the true success of a business comes from listening and caring for your customers. They can give you the best innovative suggestions.

Besides that I am almost always on my computer. I do all my own designs and promotional material. I designed and upkeep my website theasteriskboutique.com. I am also on pinterest, instagram, facebook, twitter, google business, snapchat, trip advisor, yelp and I upkeep this blog :) I really enjoy the artistic side of design and branding.

I also do all the ordering with the suggestions of Laura, Melissa, Crystal, Bristol and of course the customers! I love when we receive new deliveries and look forward to getting the new stock out on the floor once checked, steamed and priced. Of course, there are also the other ‘not so favorite’ days when I have to do book keeping and paying bills.

I really enjoy attending meetings, contributing back to the community and going off on the buying trips. I am constantly re-organizing the boutique and changing up the windows. Merchandising is one of my absolute favorite things to do because I am detail oriented with a keen eye for products being arranged artistically.

And now I'm in the beginning stages of launching the clothing company, Asterisk!

How would you describe your personal style?

My mom told me my style was more like Elton John when I was a kid. During High School I became more academically oriented and spent the most time in t-shirts and jeans. After High School I really took the time to try to find my "style". And what I found is that I don't have one I can pin down! I love to be able to change my look according to where I'm going and how I want to appear. I believe your style can tell so much of a story. Sometimes I like to be bohemian chic, business casual, glamourous and then sometimes I just want to look like a "small town girl living in a lonely world".

When did you decide to open the Asterisk Boutique in Downtown Dixon?

Shopping was always really hard for me in Dixon because I have such a unique taste for clothes. So where I saw a need, I filled it. I didn't necessarily say this is what I'm doing with my life but it's kinda just what happened and I'm really cool with that.

What do you enjoy most about the city of Dixon?

I love the art scene and the food. We have three operating live theaters, a nationally recognized art gallery and each small business has art sprinkled throughout their brick and mortar. I'm also a big food lover and I believe we have the best restaurants in the world!

What types of clothing and accessories can patrons expect to find there?

I carry contemporary women's clothing and accessories. The age range for shoppers is between 25-75. There are so many unique and trendy pieces.

What do you love most about your job?

Absolutely the people, I love the space too. The whole store is just so beautiful. I'm also very fortunate to have an incredible team that helps me, without them everything wouldn't be possible.

Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?

My favorite designers that aren't at the boutique that I pull influence from are Lauren Conrad, Ivanka Trump, Lily Pultizer, Kate Spade and Vera Wang. All five women are incredible!

My current designers that I enjoy working with are Entro, BLVD, She + Sky, Umgee, Ezra, Promesa, Honey Punch, Cello, En Jean, J.W. Signature, Cinderollies, Nikibiki, Potter's Pot, Nu Label, InStyle, Active USA and Love Riche. But I'm always on the hunt for more!

Who are your style icons?

I'm a huge instagram fan so a lot of my style inspiration comes from that. My favorite instagrams are lemonstripes, lynleeposton, dailyrachelparcell, krystin_lee, cmcoving, champagneandchanel, juliahengel, glitterguide, monikahibbs, mckennableu and many many more!

Do you have a work ‘uniform’?

Absolutely not!!! Fashion is always fun and changing.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Not having enough hours in the day! I absolutely love my job. I can't wait to get to the store every single day :)
